Lemland has only a handful of places to stay: in October 2026 Visit Åland lists one B&B on the main road and two cottage businesses on Järsö, while the nearest campsites are in Mariehamn and in neighbouring Lumparland.

What kind of accommodation is there in Lemland?

Lemland is a rural municipality of about 2,100 people, and the choice of places to stay is small and personal. We only list businesses that appear on Visit Åland’s website in October 2026, with details taken from there. Always check current dates and terms with the host before booking.

A B&B on the main road

Amalia Bed&Breakfast is at Lemlandsvägen 1865, on the road between Mariehamn and Långnäs. According to Visit Åland it has six rooms, named after sailing ships built in Lemland, of 11 to 18 m². Each room has two beds, and some can take an extra bed. Breakfast is always included. In summer Amalia also runs a café. Visit Åland describes it as open all year and as the only lodging between Mariehamn and Långnäs. The Amalia stop on Ålandstrafiken bus route 5 is right by the house.

Cottages on Järsö

Järsö is the open, southern archipelago part of Lemland, reached by road over causeways between the islands. Visit Åland lists two cottage businesses here:

  • Sommarströms stugor belong to Anderstuna farm, founded in 1635, about 10 km from Mariehamn. Guests have a private seawater lake with a jetty and their own rowing boat, and you can drive all the way to the door.
  • Fågelvik B&B and Café, Granövägen 106, is about 11 km south of Mariehamn in a bay with a shallow sandy beach. It has four simple cottages with outdoor dry toilets and an outdoor shower, plus a jetty, sauna and rowing boats. Breakfast can be added. According to Visit Åland, Fågelvik is open from 13 June to 19 August.

Read more about the area in our guide to Järsö and Nåtö.

Cottages on the main island

Two cottage businesses on Lemland’s main island are not on Visit Åland’s list but have their own websites, active in October 2026:

  • Herrö stugor rents cottages in southern Lemland, towards Herrö and Herröskatan. Booking and current prices at herro.ax.
  • Solberga stugor is at Bocknäsvägen 194 in Flaka. Booking and price list at solbergastugor.com.

Check the season and prices with them directly, as we have not compared what they offer.

Campsites nearby

Visit Åland’s list of campsites has none in Lemland. The nearest options:

  • Gröna Uddens Camping is on the shore of the Slemmern bay in Mariehamn and also has cottages.
  • Svinö stugby in neighbouring Lumparland, at Svinö where the ferry to Föglö leaves, ranges from basic camping cabins to modern houses with a fully equipped kitchen.

Mariehamn as a base

Mariehamn lies just west of Lemland and has the islands’ hotels, guesthouses and cottage villages, for example Övernäsgården with 15 cabins about 2 km from the town centre. By bus it takes ten minutes from Mariehamn bus station to the Lemström canal, according to Ålandstrafiken’s timetable. See Getting here for buses and distances.

How do I book accommodation in Lemland for the summer?

Summer is peak season, and with so few places in the municipality, rooms go quickly. Some advice:

  • Book early. Visit Åland recommends booking ahead in the summer season, June to August, especially if you travel with a car.
  • Book the ferry at the same time. Car spaces on the ferries often sell out early in the peak summer weeks, according to Visit Åland. A room without a ferry crossing will not help much.
  • Check the season. Some places, such as Fågelvik, only open in summer.
  • Read what is included. Simple cottages may have no indoor toilet or shower. Bed linen, cleaning and breakfast are sometimes extras.
  • Think about transport. Without a car, staying near bus route 5 is easiest. Buses run less often in the evenings and at weekends, according to Visit Åland.

Should I stay in Lemland or in Mariehamn?

It depends on the trip. Mariehamn has the most accommodation, restaurants and bus connections, and suits travellers without a car. Lemland suits those who want quiet, the sea close by and nature areas such as Herröskatan and Nåtö, and who have a car or a bike. Since distances are short, you can also stay in Mariehamn and make day trips to Lemland, or the other way round.

Can I wild camp in Lemland?

The right of public access (everyman’s right) applies in the Åland Islands, but it differs in several ways from Sweden and mainland Finland. According to Visit Åland:

  • Spend the night at campsites and other designated places first.
  • If you want to pitch a tent on private land, ask the landowner whenever possible.
  • If the landowner cannot be reached, you may pitch one tent for one night, well away from homes, without disturbing anyone or causing damage.
  • You may not light an open fire on someone else’s land without the permission of the landowner or occupant. Always check whether a fire ban is in force.
  • Fishing is not included in the right of public access in Åland: you need a fishing permit.
  • In nature reserves camping and fires may be prohibited.

Lemland has several nature reserves managed by the Åland government, including Herröskatan, Nåtö and Jungfruskär, according to the municipality’s list of outdoor areas. Read the rules on the information boards. For Herröskatan, see our guide to Herrö.

How far are the places to stay from the ferry ports?

Distances are short. Järsö is 10 to 11 km from Mariehamn. Långnäs, where Finnlines among others calls and where some arrivals are late in the evening or at night, is about 30 km from Mariehamn according to Visit Åland, on the same road that runs through Lemland. That makes Lemland a practical base if you arrive at or leave from Långnäs.
